Gold Retirement Account: Rules, Fees & How to Open One (2026)
A gold retirement account is a self-directed IRA that holds IRS-approved physical bullion through a qualified custodian and an approved depository arrangement. It follows ordinary IRA tax rules, adds custody and storage costs, and does not allow you to keep IRA bullion at home. Gold can lose value.
What is a gold retirement account?
“Gold retirement account” is a descriptive name for a self-directed individual retirement arrangement that can hold eligible physical precious metals. It is not a separate IRS account category and it does not create a new tax exemption. The IRA is the legal account; gold is an asset held inside it. You choose investments, while a qualified trustee or custodian administers the account and maintains the required records.
This distinction matters when an advertisement puts the metal ahead of the paperwork. Buying a gold bar for personal delivery is a cash purchase. Buying eligible bullion through an IRA requires the retirement account, documented funding and an acceptable custody arrangement. An ordinary brokerage account holding a gold exchange-traded fund also gives a different ownership and fee structure from an IRA holding bullion.
A self-directed account may be traditional or Roth, if the custodian offers the arrangement. Tax treatment depends on the account and the transaction, not on the metal’s name. Read the eligible metals guide before choosing products. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Who handles the money, metal and records?
There are separate jobs in the transaction. The dealer sells the metal and quotes the purchase and resale prices. The custodian opens and administers the IRA, processes permitted instructions and handles reporting. The depository stores the bullion under the custody arrangement. A dealer may introduce service providers without performing all of those jobs itself.
Before signing, identify the legal entity on each agreement. Ask who receives the funds, who confirms the metal allocation, who sends account statements and who answers a storage claim. A polished kit is not a substitute for an account agreement. If a salesperson describes a fee as “ours,” ask whether it is the dealer’s charge or a custodian or depository charge passed through to the account.
- Get the custodian’s full fee schedule and the storage agreement.
- Confirm that the account title and beneficiary instructions are correct.
- Ask how the statement identifies each holding and its valuation method.
- Keep the trade confirmation, custody statement and delivery-to-depository record together.
What IRS rules apply to gold held in an IRA?
IRC 408(m) generally treats metals and coins as collectibles but provides exceptions for specified coins and qualifying bullion. Bullion must meet the statutory fineness standard tied to regulated futures contracts and be physically held by a bank or an approved nonbank trustee. A dealer’s “IRA eligible” tag should be checked against the custodian’s product acceptance policy. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Fineness means metal purity. It is only part of eligibility: the exact product, the applicable coin exception and the custody arrangement matter too. Do not assume that a collectible or commemorative coin qualifies because it contains gold. Ask the custodian to accept the exact product description in writing before the purchase is authorized.
Home storage is not an acceptable arrangement for your IRA bullion. The IRS expressly says the physical-possession requirement also applies when an IRA-owned limited liability company buys the bullion. A home safe or personally controlled box does not replace an eligible trustee. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Storage documents should identify the facility and explain the allocation, insurance, access and release process. “Approved depository” should mean an arrangement accepted by the qualified custodian under the applicable rules; it is not an IRS endorsement of a dealer or a promise about investment performance. See home storage rules for the practical document checklist.
How much can you contribute in 2026?
For tax year 2026, the combined traditional and Roth IRA contribution limit is $7,500 IRS · as of 2026-11-04. For someone age 50 or older IRS · as of 2026-11-04, the combined limit is $8,600 IRS · as of 2026-11-04, still subject to taxable compensation. The limit applies across those IRAs, rather than separately to every account.
A company’s purchase minimum is a different rule. It describes the amount a dealer generally accepts for an account or initial purchase. It does not increase the annual contribution allowance. A larger eligible transfer or rollover can fund an account without being an ordinary annual contribution. Roth income eligibility and the deductibility of traditional IRA contributions require separate checks.
Goldco’s generally stated amount available to roll over is $25,000Goldco IRA FAQ · as of 2026-10-29. That is a company requirement, not a federal minimum. Compare company minimums and the contribution rules before assuming a new annual deposit will meet an advertised account threshold.
What does a gold retirement account cost?
Start with the full transaction, rather than a headline annual fee. Setup opens the account. Annual custody covers administration. Storage pays for holding the metal under the selected arrangement. The metal purchase itself includes dealer pricing, which can differ materially from the public spot quote. Shipping, wire, distribution, liquidation and account-closing charges may also apply.
Custodian and depository examples are not all-in dealer quotes. Storage types differ. Missing verified values are marked “Written quote required.” See the scope notes below before comparing.
- Goldco: custody example uses Equity Trust. The custodian’s published non-segregated storage schedule, not a dealer quote, supersedes the older storage figures on Goldco’s cost page; segregated storage is $160Custodian Equity Trust’s published storage schedule; not a dealer quoteEquity Trust fee FAQ · as of 2026-10-29. Other custodians may differ.
- Augusta: the published storage example does not identify the storage type. Do not assume it is the same arrangement as another company’s quote.
- Birch: the fees are an Equity Trust and Delaware Depository example, not fees charged by Birch itself. Wire charges can be separate.
- Noble: the support FAQ and older IRA page use different setup presentations and storage prices. The table uses the support FAQ’s primary figures, labels the conflict, and requires confirmation. Noble says it offers segregated storage only.
- Patriot: conditional fee promotions and a storage-page setup statement do not establish an unconditional account price. Qualification thresholds and a general storage rate are not verified in our source snapshot. Patriot Gold Group · as of 2026-10-29
These are published examples, not binding offers and not a complete estimate for your account. The table deliberately leaves unverified amounts blank rather than borrowing another company’s custodian schedule. A low advertised administration fee cannot tell you whether the metal purchase price is competitive. Request a dated written quote showing the cash outlay, product quantities, every account charge and the amount the dealer would currently pay to buy the same products back.
Ask how each fee is paid. If cash is maintained inside the IRA for charges, understand how that reserve is funded and monitored. If a promotion covers a charge, obtain the eligibility terms, the duration and the standard schedule after the offer. Read the fee comparison for quote-by-quote questions.
How do you open a gold retirement account?
Work from the account documents toward the purchase. Opening a self-directed IRA does not require an immediate metal order, and requesting a kit should remain a research step. The responsible parties should be clear before funds leave the existing account.
- Confirm the account and funding route. Identify whether you are opening a traditional or Roth IRA and whether the money will be a contribution, trustee transfer or eligible employer-plan rollover. Ask the current provider about restrictions and outstanding distribution requirements.
- Select the custodian and storage arrangement. Read the account agreement, fee schedule, accepted-metals policy and depository terms. Verify which organization performs each job instead of relying on the dealer’s brand name.
- Open the IRA and check instructions. Supply the custodian’s required identity and beneficiary information. Verify payment instructions using a known contact route, particularly if an email introduces changed bank details.
- Move eligible funds using the agreed route. Keep the transfer or rollover request and confirmation. Do not send retirement funds to a personal bank account unless you understand the distribution and redeposit rules.
- Approve a specific, written metal order. Get product names, quantities, unit prices, charges and the current resale quote. Confirm that the custodian accepts the products and the depository arrangement.
- Reconcile the completed transaction. Match the trade confirmation to the custodian’s statement and storage confirmation. Preserve documents needed for later fees, distributions and eventual liquidation.
Do not assume that the dealer’s estimated completion time is a commitment by your existing plan administrator or receiving custodian. Ask which unresolved action would prevent the next step and who owns that action. Our account-opening checklist gives you questions to take to each provider.
Is a rollover different from a transfer?
Yes. A trustee-to-trustee IRA transfer moves assets between IRA providers without paying the money to you. A direct rollover generally moves an eligible employer-plan distribution to the receiving retirement account. An indirect rollover pays a distribution to you first and requires a valid redeposit. Sales material sometimes uses “rollover” loosely for every account move; the paperwork needs the precise route.
| Route | Who receives the payment? | What should you confirm? |
|---|---|---|
| IRA trustee transfer | The receiving IRA trustee or custodian | Account types, receiving instructions and provider charges. |
| Direct employer-plan rollover | The receiving IRA or plan | Distribution eligibility and the plan administrator’s payment procedure. |
| Indirect rollover | You, before redeposit | Deadline, withholding, rollover eligibility and the IRA frequency restriction. |
IRS · as of 2026-11-04 A movement from pretax savings into a Roth account can have tax consequences even if the institutions handle the payment directly. An RMD cannot be rolled over. Ask a qualified tax professional to review the route before funds move when account types, inherited assets or after-tax basis make the situation less straightforward.
Compare the outgoing plan’s investments, expenses, services and relevant protections before leaving it. A metal dealer’s account-opening assistance is not an independent comparison of everything you might give up. Our IRA versus workplace plan comparison starts with those differences.
How does the 60-day rollover rule work?
If an eligible distribution is paid to you, the usual redeposit deadline is 60 days from receipt IRS · as of 2026-11-04. Missing it can turn the transaction into a taxable distribution unless applicable relief is available. An institution-to-institution route can avoid having the money pass through your hands, but still needs correct account instructions.
Indirect IRA-to-IRA rollovers generally have a one-rollover-per-12-month-period limit across your IRAs IRS · as of 2026-11-04. That restriction does not apply to trustee-to-trustee transfers or direct plan rollovers. A deadline extension or waiver should never be assumed because a salesperson says the transfer is still “in progress.”
An eligible employer-plan distribution paid to you is generally subject to 20% mandatory withholding IRS · as of 2026-11-04. Rolling over the full gross distribution may require replacing the withheld amount from other funds before the deadline. Tax reporting and later recovery of withholding are separate matters. Get the gross distribution, withheld amount, receipt date and redeposit confirmation documented.
If money has already been paid out, tell the receiving custodian the exact receipt date and ask a tax professional about your actual eligibility and deadline. Do not start another indirect IRA rollover to fix an uncertain first transaction. See the rollover steps guide for the records to assemble.
How do RMDs work when an IRA holds gold?
Owning metal does not remove required minimum distributions from a traditional IRA. Current IRS guidance generally starts RMDs at age 73 IRS · as of 2026-11-04; the applicable starting rule depends on the account owner’s circumstances and birth year. Roth IRA owners have no lifetime RMDs, while beneficiary rules differ. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
A metal holding creates a practical liquidity issue. The account needs a way to satisfy a distribution requirement while also covering administration and storage. Ask the custodian about selling metal for cash versus distributing metal in kind, including the valuation date, processing charges and reporting. A physical distribution changes where the asset is held and does not make the value disappear for tax purposes.
Plan the processing before the deadline. A dealer may need a purchase confirmation and the custodian may need cleared cash or delivery instructions. Metal units are not always convenient for an exact distribution amount. If other traditional IRAs are involved, ask whether aggregation is permitted for your account types; employer-plan and inherited-account rules can be different. Our RMD guide explains the administrative choices to discuss.
What are the main risks and tradeoffs?
Gold can decline in price and does not pay interest or dividends. The IRA wrapper changes the tax and administration framework, not the underlying market risk. Selling may produce less than the amount shown on a statement because the statement’s valuation and an executable dealer bid serve different purposes. Annual fees continue even when metal prices fall.
- Purchase and resale pricing. A premium collectible-style product may be difficult to compare with standard bullion. Request a same-product resale bid before approving the purchase.
- Liquidity and concentration. Retirement funds placed in metal are exposed to that asset’s price movements. You may need to sell at an inconvenient time to meet cash needs.
- Custody and operational risk. Incorrect titles, delayed records or misunderstood storage terms can make a transaction hard to trace. Identify the responsible provider for each stage.
- Tax and paperwork errors. Ineligible products, personal possession or an invalid rollover can create consequences that an advertised fee waiver does not offset.
- Sales incentives. A representative may be paid to complete a transaction. Educational material can still be marketing, including a free kit.
Consider the alternatives in terms of the exposure and services you actually want. A brokerage IRA holding a fund linked to gold, an employer plan with a broad investment menu and personally owned bullion each involve different ownership rights and costs. None can be evaluated solely from a claim that the physical metal is “real money.” Read agreements and current quotes, and take personal suitability questions to an appropriately qualified adviser.
How should you compare companies and their kits?
Use the same written request for every provider. State the account type, the proposed funding route and the storage preference without committing to a purchase. Ask for a standard bullion quote and the corresponding immediate resale quote. This makes it harder for different product mixes or temporary fee offers to obscure the real cost comparison.
A buyback program is a process for asking a dealer to repurchase metal; it is not by itself a guaranteed future price or a promise of prompt execution. Ask whether the dealer is obliged to quote, what conditions apply and whether the IRA custodian imposes an additional processing charge. Keep the answer with the original order documents.
Our company comparison uses alphabetical order and published source checks, with no ratings or ranking scores. That ordering does not mean the first company suits you best. Our methodology explains exclusions, fee scope and how we handle missing or conflicting figures. Goldco is the only company for which this site carries an affiliate kit link.
The free-kit guide explains what to look for in the material and what requesting it can mean for follow-up contact. A kit is useful when it answers questions you can check independently. It is less useful when it substitutes broad economic commentary for actual account terms, product prices and withdrawal procedures.
How can you compare the purchase and resale prices?
Ask the dealer to put the proposed purchase and an immediate resale bid on the same document, with the same product names and quantities. The purchase quote should show what leaves the IRA; the resale quote should show what the IRA would receive before any separate custodian or delivery charges. This is a practical way to expose the difference between entering and leaving the position without predicting a future market price.
Do not accept a comparison that changes the product midway through the discussion. A quote for a specialty coin cannot be evaluated using the resale price of a different bullion bar. If the salesperson says the product has a special resale market, ask who participates in that market and whether a current executable bid is available. A story about rarity is not the same evidence as a buyer’s written offer.
Ask whether the bid requires delivery to the dealer, a custodian instruction or an inspection before it becomes firm. Find out when price risk passes to the buyer and who pays shipping or processing. If the account statement shows a different value, ask the custodian how that value was obtained. Keep the valuation method and the executable quote separate in your records.
What should storage and insurance documents tell you?
Storage descriptions are often short in marketing material. The agreement should explain how the account’s ownership is recorded and how your holdings are distinguished from other customers’ property. Ask whether you are entitled to specific identified items or to equivalent eligible metal when the custodian requests a release. Do not infer those rights solely from the words “segregated” or “insured.”
Request the insurance description and ask which entity is insured, which events are covered, what exclusions apply and who submits a claim. Coverage of a facility or shipment does not automatically answer how an individual account would be compensated in a particular loss. Ask the custodian which documents would establish the account’s holdings if a record or inventory discrepancy arose.
Also ask how you would change depositories without taking personal possession. The custodian should explain the authorization, transport and recordkeeping process, along with any charges. A later personal delivery is a different event from a custody-to-custody move. Discuss that distinction before treating direct access to stored bullion as an account benefit.
You should be able to trace a complete chain from the funded IRA to the authorized order, the depository receipt and the custodian statement. If a link is missing, ask the responsible provider for confirmation. The purpose is to understand the actual arrangement you are signing, including how it would be unwound if you decide to leave.
What should you check before moving retirement money?
Keep the decision reversible for as long as possible by separating research, account opening, funding and trading instructions. Read the contract before granting authority to buy particular products. If a document differs from a phone explanation, ask for a correction or a written clarification before proceeding. Save the version you actually signed.
- Match the receiving institution and account title to independently confirmed instructions.
- Confirm the precise funding route and any unresolved distribution obligation.
- Obtain the custodian and storage schedules as well as the dealer’s price quote.
- Get exact product eligibility accepted by the custodian.
- Compare the purchase outlay with a current resale bid for those same products.
- Understand how fees, a future sale and eventual distributions will be handled.
Pause when a representative discourages reading documents, promises a particular investment return or treats personal home storage as an ordinary IRA feature. Those statements deserve scrutiny even when the company has recognizable branding. Our red-flag checklist gives concrete questions for checking a proposal.
This guide is general education from Lead Partner AS, Norway. It is not financial or tax advice. The sensible next step is to gather documents and clarify unknowns, rather than treating a kit request or an IRA application as a recommendation to buy metal. A decision can remain “no” after you have done the research.
What else should you know?
Is a gold retirement account the same as a gold IRA?
Usually, yes. The phrase describes a self-directed IRA holding eligible physical metals. It is not a separate IRS tax category.
Can I keep IRA gold in my home?
No. IRA bullion must remain in a qualified custody arrangement. An IRA-owned LLC does not remove the IRS physical-possession requirement.
Does a company minimum raise my contribution limit?
No. A dealer minimum and the federal annual contribution allowance are different requirements. Eligible rollovers and transfers are separate from ordinary annual contributions.
Can a workplace retirement plan fund a gold IRA?
An eligible distribution may be rolled into a receiving IRA, subject to the plan’s rules and tax requirements. Ask the plan administrator whether your funds are available for a rollover.
Is requesting a free Goldco kit opening an account?
No. It requests company marketing information. Review the current form’s contact consent, and expect follow-up from the company.
Are storage fees the complete cost?
No. Setup, custody, storage, dealer purchase and resale pricing, and transaction or distribution charges can all affect the cost.
Is a buyback offer a guaranteed return?
No. A repurchase process does not establish a future resale price or ensure that you recover the purchase premium. Obtain the actual terms.
Can a gold IRA lose money?
Yes. Metal prices can fall, fees continue, and resale bids may be below purchase prices. The account’s tax treatment does not guarantee performance.
Does physical gold remove RMD obligations?
No. Traditional IRA distribution requirements still apply. Ask the custodian about cash and in-kind processing before any applicable deadline.
